Just three days after her wedding, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) is already on a plane headed back to work in Washington. So wait, no honeymoon?
“Um… at some point,” answered Gabbard. She and her new husband, cinematographer Abraham Williams, have yet to make “solid plans” for one of those over-the-top getaways Pinterest could be proud of. “It’ll be when we don’t have any votes happening in Congress,” she said.
Not every newlywed has to maneuver around the House calendar, but Gabbard hardly skipped a beat.
“We just value the pockets of time we get,” she said, adding that the couple will make their home in Hawaii where Williams works. Gabbard will travel back whenever her schedule allows, and her husband will make the trip to D.C. when the congresswoman can’t return home.
“We’ll both be on the plane quite a bit,” said Gabbard during a brief phone interview just before her flight to Washington took off, her cell signal cutting in and out as she described Thursday’s traditional Verdic ceremony as “nothing short of magical,” “incredibly meaningful,” and “perfect.” Her dad sang “The Wedding Song” by Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary. Gabbard’s sister and brother-in-law also sang, and the wedding’s 300 guests joined in. “Everyone who was there felt like a member of our family,” said the congresswoman.

This is new for Gabbard. The whole “let me tell you all about my personal life” thing. She’s not used it, but she’s been open to it recently, with articles in The New York Times and People magazine.
“It’s new for both of us,” said Gabbard of all the recent attention. “Abraham really does not like being in the spotlight, and I prefer to focus on talking about the work that we’re doing.” But nobody can resist the gravitational pull of a wedding (including well-wishers back home on the street and the good-bye party at the airport) and Gabbard’s gotten caught up in it, too — or at least she was last week because today it’s back to work.
